- Astoria, OR to North Bend, OR
This is part 1/2 of the Oregon Coast Bike Route. The route spans the entire coast, Astoria to Brookings. The route was created by the Oregon Department of Transportation. Most of the shoulders on the southbound side of scenic hwy 101 are widened and the route is very well signed. On top of that there are many state parks on the Oregon coast that have hiker/biker sites which charge only $4 per person per night. If that wasn’t cool enough many of those camp grounds have free hot showers!

- Bellingham Around Lake Samish
I’m showing a bit of my local pride with this bike map. This ride starts in Bellingham, loops around Lake Samish, and back. The whole ride is a little more than 20 miles. It’s a nice ride with a few hills at the beginning and end of the route. I love riding this on a nice sunny day. The ride past the crest of the hill on Samish is great. There is a good downhill slope and the scenery is really nice, especially along the lake. I also recommend this as a training ride. It isn’t really all that long but the hills can be killer if you aren’t used to riding a lot.
- Bellingham Around Lummi Nation
This is another one of my favorite local rides. It’s a flat easy ride that comes in at about 30 miles. Sometimes I’ll go out Marine Dr. instead of Northwest Dr. to make it quicker. All of the roads on this bike map are fairly untraveled but the speed limit may be fairly high. The road conditions are fine though. Somewhere on the east side of Lummi Nation past Cagey Rd. and before the road gets away from the coast I’ve encountered a pack of dogs that give a good chase when I ride by. I’ve never been bit but the dogs seem serious so I’ve never slowed to find out. I’d reserve some extra speed for that leg of the ride.
- Bellingham Hill Ride
This is my hill training ride. The goal of the ride is to hit up all the hills in town. It’s a good training ride, it’s short and a pain in the ass.

- Bellingham to Anacortes
This is the route from Belllingham to the Anacortes ferry Terminal. The route takes Chuckanut to Bow. Then heads through Bay View to hwy 20. This is a better way to go than taking Farm to Market Rd because it’s more scenic, less traffic, and the road condition is better. At hwy 20 the route heads west until just after the bridge where it exits to S March Point Rd. This road is part of an Anacortes city pike path. Eventually the path hooks up with a pedestrian bridge that connects to the border of Anacortes.
- Bellingham to Birch Bay
This is a loop from Bellingham to Birch Bay. The route goes out of town on Chestnut/Marine Dr. Then it takes Slater to the west and Lake Terrell to the north. It runs back into town via Northwest drive. Overall the route is pretty flat. The total length is about 50 miles.
- Bellingham to Deception Pass

- Bellingham Tweed Ride 2012
It was a wet and windy tweed ride but (almost) everyone had a great time!
- Bellingham, Acme, Mosquito Lake Rd, Mt Baker HWY loop
This ride starts on Lakeway and goes out Lake Louise Rd south around Lake Whatcom. From there it takes Park Rd and HWY 9 to Acme. In Acme the route takes a right onto Mosquito Rd. and immediately ascends the most brutal hill in existence (at least that’s how I remember it). Once past the hill the road is nice, it’s very peaceful. It winds through forest for the most part. Riding on Mt Baker HWY (542) is kinda crappy because there is traffic but it’s the only road back into town really. If you plan the ride right (weekdays, off hours) you can mis most of the traffic.

- Blaine, WA to Deception Pass State Park
This route starts at the Peace Arch park on the Canadian-U.S. border. It ends at the Deception Pass State Park campground. The total distance is 73 miles. Initially the route is flat and fairly rural. The turn onto Marine Dr. signals the route entering the city of Bellingham and city type traffic conditions. Once it leaves Bellingham the route hugs the coastline and becomes more hilly but never very extreme. Overall the route is very scenic and a pleasure to ride. If you are riding during the right season you can stop at the Bellingham Farmer’s Market on Railroad Ave. or at a small roadside produce stand on Chuckanut Dr. and Colony Rd. for some great local produce.

- Cape Lookout SP To Newport, OR
This is a gorgeous which starts at the bottom of a giant hill. It was a rude awakening for me. There is one other big hill about halfway through the route. When the route comes to Slab Creek Rd. I suggest taking the detour off hwy 101. It’s a little longer but the incline isn’t as steep and it’s more scenic. Be sure to stop at Devil’s Punch Bowl and enjoy the view. At high tide it is spectacular.
- Capitola to Monterey
This is an interesting ride through a highly productive agricultural area of California. The ride out of Capitola is nice, it winds through the outskirts of the Santa Cruz suburbs and then drops into farmland. The route passes by Castroville which is considered ‘the artichoke capitol of the world.’ Every year the town elects an artichoke queen who presides over a parade. That title has been held by at least one famous lady, Miss Marilyn Monroe. Once past Castroville the route starts to creep into Monterey. At the end of Del Monte Blvd the route gets on a path which follows hwy 1 into Monterey. The end of the route is at the top of the tallest hill in Monterey, Veterans Memorial Park. The park has biker sites available but they aren’t well marked. The total distance of the route is 43 mi.
- Cedar Hill to Midlothian

- Centralia, WA to Wahkiakum County Line Park
This route really gets off the beaten path. It winds around the outside of Chehalis, Napavine, Toledo, Vader, Castle Rock, and Longview. The last section of the route is along the Columbia River on hwy 4. Because this route is away from most towns the views can get pretty nice but most importantly, there is almost no traffic. There are a few significant hills, the last one it particularly steep. Total distance: 71 miles.

The terrain is flat, the traffic isn’t bad, and there are good shoulders for the entire route.

- Climb To Cook’s (56 MILES / 4,470 FEET)
This is one of my favorite mid-summer Century rides. The ride features climbing through quiet, forested portions of Amador and El Dorado counties and attains sufficient elevation (Cook’s Station = 5,000 feet) that the mid-portion of the ride is not too hot. I recommend starting early enough (7:00 – 7:30 AM) that the Slug Gulch climb isn’t too hot.
Starting at Howard Park in Ione, all riders bike to Plymouth and Fiddletown. The 56 mile course then proceeds to Volcano and Sutter Creek on the way back to Ione. The 93 mile route proceeds from Fiddletown to Mt. Aukum and Omo Ranch. From there riders descend to Volcano and Sutter Creek on the return to Ione.

This route starts at the top of Whidbey Island and ends at the mouth of the Hood Canal. The route is 63 mi. long. The route on Whidbey is really pleasant with rolling hills, small towns, and lots of great views. Port Townsend is a neat town that is wort a stop if you have a chance. The route then winds through forested coastline with scattered towns before coming to the Hood Canal Floating Bridge. The bridge deck is grating which is very hazardous to cyclists. There is a metal plate on the side of the road which you should ride on (I learned this the hard way). The Kitsap Memorial Park is not far from the bridge. It has a hiker-biker section in the forest across the road from the main camping area.

- Ft George Brewery to Rogue Brewery
This is a portion of the Oregon Coast Bike Route. This section is especially excellent because it starts and ends with two great breweries. The Ft. George brewery is located in Astoria, OR and the Rogue Brewery is in Newport, OR. The riding between the two is mostly flat with great ocean views. I highly recommend spending some time at Devils Punchbowl SP and grabbing Mos chowder while you are there.
- Ft. Stevens SP to Cape Lookout SP
This is a great ride. The scenery is amazing, the roads are good, and there are a bunch of little towns to stop and take breaks at. I highly recommend stopping at the Tillamook cheese factory and taking a tour, they give out free, unattended samples at the end.
This route is part of the Oregon Coast Bike Route. You can find great but undetailed maps at state parks or bike shops.

Santa Cruz Mountain brewery offers more unique brews with a mix of styles from Europe and America. Don’t for get to stop at the Swanton Berry Farms north of Davenport. - Oregon Coast Bike Route
From the Brochure:
Oregon has been supporting bicycling since 1971 by developing bikeways throughout the state. Thousands of bicyclists enjoy the natural beauty of the Oregon Coast Bike Route annually. For the most part, it follows US Highway 101 as a shoulder bikeway. In several areas, the route departs from the main highway and follows county roads and city streets. These sections are closer to the ocean, are more scenic, and have lower traffic volumes and slower traffic speeds. The total length of the signed bike route is 370 miles (595 km). It can be lengthened to 380 miles (610 km) by taking the alternate Three Capes Scenic Route. On average, most cyclists take six to eight days to tour the coast, by cycling 50 to 65 miles (80 to 105 km) per day. This is a reasonable rate, due to the mountainous nature of the coast: the total rise and fall is close to 16,000 feet (4900 m).
Note: Some alternate routes were used when creating this map. The original map can be seen below.

It isn’t like riding in San Francisco or another big city but there is a lot of traffic and not much space all the same. Capitola is more like a neighborhood of Santa Cruz than a separate city. It’s a nice area with a gorgeous beach. The New Brighton State Beach has biker camp sites but no hiker sites. The campground is decent but there is not a lot of privacy between sites.

I remember seeing a lot of border patrol officers along the route that day. The ride from Coronado to Imperial beach is actually pretty nice. It’s on a flat bike path the whole way. Once into Imperial Beach the ride becomes nothing special. Reaching the border crossing is really anti-climatic. It is not a pleasant place at all.

- San Francisco to Pigeon Pt. Lighthouse
This route is 51 miles long. The start in San Francisco is urban riding but it isn’t too bad, SF is pretty understanding of cyclists. Leaving the isn’t fun bad though. There is a lot of suburban riding to get off hyw 1 which is a freeway that that point. Then when you get to Pacifica you are treated with an awesome view right before hwy 1 turns back into a steep narrow winding 2 lane hwy with no shoulders. That area is known as “Devils Slide,” presumably because the cliffs which hwy 1 is perched on are so steep. The downhill section isn’t as bad and the view of the ocean is nice. After the Devils Slide area the route becomes tame, the traffic isn’t as bad and it passes several public beaches which are great to take breaks. The route ends at Pigeon Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse is a historical landmark with a hostel on the park. The lighthouse isn’t in operation but the hostel operates nicely. If you need a place to stay I recommend it.

- St Thomas – Scenic Ride: Crown Mountain to UVI and more
Skyline Dr westward to Lionel Pierre Berry Scenic Dr aka Crown Mountain Rd (rte 30) to rte 301 to University of Virgin Islands (UVI) to Veterans Dr (rte 30) through town (Charlotte Amalie) to rte 38 and returning uphill via rte 39 to Skyline Dr (rte 40).
- St Thomas – Skyline Dr to Magen’s Bay
From Wintberg/Beacon Point on Skyline Dr: loop to the beach at Magen’s Bay returning via Mandahl Rd aka Mandal Rd (rte 42) above Mahogany Run Golf Course. This return is a longer slower climb (less steep) than a more direct return to Skyline Dr (rte 40).
- St Thomas – Skyline to East End to town
From Wintberg/Beacon Point on Skyline Dr eastward to Red Hook, into town (Charlotte Amalie) via Tutu Park; returning via Mafolie Rd (Mafolie Rd is VERY strenuous for those used to sea level riding). Busy, somewhat scenic, practical for getting a sense of the main roads of the eastern half of the island.

- STP Bike Route 2010 (Day 1)
This is the route of the Seattle To Portland Bicycle Classic, 2010. The ride can be done in one day but most people take two. This bike map shows the route of the first day. It is true to the route except between Yelm and Tenino where the ride uses a bike trail. It was easier to just use the street for this map and there isn’t much difference for this purpose.
The route itself is really nice. It is mostly flat except for “the hill” in Puyallup. Because this was designed for a major ride this route follows many main roads. This is necessary because 10,000 people participate in the ride each year. All of the roads are safe to ride on, however, much of the route is on high traffic roads. My favorite half of the ride is from Auburn to Centralia. The scenery is great.
- STP Bike Route 2010 (Day 2)
This is the route of the Seattle To Portland Bicycle Classic, 2010. The ride can be done in one day but most people take two. This bike map shows the route of the second day.
The second day is broken into two parts, Centralia to Longview and Longview to Portland. The first part is mostly rolling hills through rural Washington. Upon reaching Longview the route crosses the Columbia River via the Louis and Clark Bridge. Riders are guided across the bridge by volunteers on motorcycles. A lot is said about how dangerous the bridge is during the ride. In reality it’s not that bad, the shoulders are wide and at no time does the route cross the flow of traffic.
Once over the bridge the route follows hwy 30 to Portland. The route is scenic but traffic is high and shoulders can be narrow. I don’t like this portion of the ride very much. When the route reaches Portland it goes through an industrial area then through the trendy Pearl District before crossing the steel bridge and ending at Holiday Park next to the Loyd Center mall.

- Sunset Beach SP to Humbug Mountain SP
Initially this route winds through a lot of old logging roads which have been paved and now serve rural homes. They all have interesting names like 7 devils rd. or whiskey run. I think 7 devils refers to the hills the road runs over. There are a lot of big rollers. Once the route reaches hwy 101 again the ride gets much easier. It’s pretty flat and farther away from the coast so there isn’t much wind.
While passing through Langlois I recommend getting one of their "famous" hot dogs.

- Twanoh SP to Centralia, WA
This is a long ride, 87 miles total. Most of it is easy riding through farmland. There is a big hill about halfway through the day but it’s short and the decline lasts for a while after it which makes the day easier. There are a couple of small towns on the route but they aren’t much to see. I did make a detour in Shelton so that part of the route could be changed. The route ends at the Olympic Club in Centralia.
